A black and white chequered catwalk stretches out across the underground car park, the area, now empty of cars, is teaming with people and dotted with hundreds of seats. And as the lights dim, from the darkness a model emerges from the optical illusion backdrop wearing an amazing Christopher Kane printed dress. I’m at Harvey Nichols Fashion Show and the funky tunes have me wondering if toe-tapping in the front row is frowned upon.

The Cheynes team

Earlier on, I’d been invited backstage to witness the Harvey Nichols creative team prepare for the show. Downstairs in the bowels of the store, a team from Cheynes hairdressers lead by Artistic Director Ashley Kerr were busy pinning and preening the locks of the ten female models. The look was modern take on a beehive, finished with a spliced fringe. Ashley explains,

“It’s almost a combination of a French roll and a beehive. We wanted to give volume to hair and more specifically height at the crown so we used a pony tail to achieve this. And to create the fringe we used the ends of the hair. It is a tricky style to do when models have lots of hair.”

The look starts with a ponytail high on the crown. Hair is then backcombed and is divided into three sections, which are then wrapped around the bun and leaving the ends out to create the fringe. And thanks to lashing of Wella products the hair stays put.

The team from Shu Uemura

Upstairs the Shu Uemura Artistic team lead by the brand’s Senior Makeup Artist, Hadyn Jones were working their makeup magic and a bold, graphic eye liner look stood out. This was Cleopatra but taken into sixties and given a punky, funky edge: pretty but edgy and in keeping with that specific spring trend – monochrome.

Haydn begins to applie eye makeup to model Pamela

To create the look Haydn and the team prep and moisturise using Shu Uemura Ultim8 cleansing oil and Deepsea Hydrability. Brightening mousse is applied to brighten skin but kept to diamond in the centre so give maximum impact. Illuminating Foundation and sheer powder is applied to set and give that all-important velvet looking finish.

Then there’s those amazing eyes which are created with the matte side of the eye light pencil as a base and on top of this white eye shadow. Using a flat brush, eye shadows 851 and 863 are applied to give a sixties contour. The black liner is a lesson in precision, running straight and under the eye. Keeping with that modern vibe, no mascara is applied, and eye lashes are just curled. On the cheeks, Haydn uses a matte pink lipstick for the creamy texture and to avoid any shine and on the lips the new shade PK 40g is dabbed just in the centre.

Later on, when I see the models on the catwalk, the spliced fringes look really effective. With the eye makeup, models could look like modern day Cleopatras but the hair keeps things from looking sweet and pretty. And given that Vogue has dubbed this The Year of Punk and the album of the year likely to be David Bowie’s it seems like a perfect marriage of looks.
